Since 1903, the WEA's aim has been to see that no adult is denied access to education on the basis of social, economic or personal disadvantage.
A short, part-time course is often the starting point for inspiring personal transformations, from increased self-confidence to getting a first job after long-term unemployment, and learning again as an adult after childhood difficulties at school.
Since our inception, we've worked with trade unions and community groups to bring learning into the workplace and community centres. For over half a century, WEA extramural programmes have brought learning to people in remote areas. And together with our partner organisations, we've delivered programmes tailored to the needs of vulnerable groups in the community.
We receive no government funding in Victoria, and are dependent on donations to continue our work. Your donation will help us continue educating for social change in communities like yours.
Developing leaders. Creating real social change.
The WEA creates lasting social change through education, empowering communities to organise for a more democratic, equal and just world. The WEA was instrumental in popularising the concept of the welfare state and full employment, with WEA members going on to pioneer these policies in government.
WEA alumni include former prime ministers John Curtin, Michael Joseph Savage, Sir Walter Nash and Peter Fraser; numerous British cabinet ministers and MPs including Hugh Gaitskell and Arthur Greenwood; and other public figures such as G. D. H. Cole and William Temple. We continue this work today, with campaigns on issues such as economic justice and workers' rights, equality for women, environmental protection and international solidarity.
